So I stripped and dyed my tan western leather saddle black with fiebings dye and it looked really nice, and all the parts were covered. There were a few places that just didn't want to dye, but they eventually did. I let it dry for 24 hours. Then I started to apply the acrylic resolene (also fiebings) and it took some of the black dye off, exposing the tan color underneath. I think the spots that changed back to tan were the places that were hard to dye. Does anyone know what I did wrong? Did I not strip it well enough or apply enough dye (FYI I applied 3 coats)? And how can I fix this problem and make it look nice and not ruin the saddle? Thanks!

I am new to sewing on a machine, I have only been hand sewing for about a year, that being said; I have a PFAFF 1245 the timing is fine but the thread keeps breaking. I have tried #69, #92, and #207 on top and for the bobbin I use the #69 thread. I get started and before long the thread breaks, and in reverse it will break right away. If someone could tell me if I have missed the boat and doing something wrong. I have been using 7-8 oz. leather and have had the same problem with 2-3 oz. leather??? Help and thanks Stu...

I am new to the sewing machine world and would like to know if there is a chart that shows needle size VS thread size and what size to use for what OZ leather. I have been hand sewing and lacing for years but never the luxury of a machine. Any thoughts would be appreciated. Thank you for taking the time.

This is an old saddle. No rivets are visible on this saddle so cannot identify that way. I believe it is an old Bona Allen saddle. Everything on it is original except the latigo which I added after buying it. The latigo keeper has 3 sets of numbers on it. the number 5, a set of numbers 1229 and then in larger numbers 3948. I know it is a 15" seat and a 6" gullet. It has old brass "D" rings and wooden stirrups. The stirrup straps are laced and not buckled.

  3. I just got through working with the little boy next door on some leather and it got me thinking about kids. We mangled a bracelet, and some hair-on-hide and he had a great time, and I enjoyed it too. We went outside and made a matting tool out of a stick, and he stayed and worked on leather while his mom ran to get his sister.

I like knowing that for a while most days he's respected and listened to and enjoyed. And it got me thinking of all the scouts a friend of mine works with and how many lives she's impacting. And just an overall wish that all the children tonight were listened to and respected and enjoyed for a while.

I am new to this site and trying to learn to use it. I have recently purchased a Singer Industrial model 31-15 and if any one can share information on this machine it would be a big help like proper thread and needle and thickness of leather that can be sewed.

I hope this goes through. Thanks

  4. blog-0957821001357355656.jpgHi, all. I have a Hansen string cutter and also a rounder. They are the original style Frank made, and have a base with drilled holes which you then bolt down onto...whatever...I bolted them onto a board and then would clamp the whole unit to a work table. (I see that the new ones have a built-in clamp). It also has the original style of locknuts (not the wingnuts). For me personally, I think the old style is much superior because you can REALLY tighten it down rather than just finger-tighten, but that's just my preference. It was used very gently, on goathide only, for 2 years and then has been carefully stored ever since. It has a lovely patina. (I think!) As you all probably know you can get a new splitter off the Hansen website for $445 including shipping, and the rounder for $235 including shipping, so that's $680 for both. I'll sell my set for $440 including shipping if you live in CA, NV, OR or AZ, and $450 if you live elsewhere. Thanks for your interest. The best way to reach my is by direct email which is westernartist@gmail.com and my name is Jeanne Miller.

Hi, I am new to this sight. I have never worked with leather, before working with it to make jesses and anklets for my Red Tail Hawk. I have made several different styles of anklets. I did not know about the stretch of leather and how to make leather stronger. Does anybody else have any advice for a beginner working with leather to make my equipment

I am trying to get started in leather works. I want to do everything from leather bible covers to leather purses to saddles. I am trying to find a sewing machine suitable for what I need. It is my understanding that I am going to need two sewing machines. A lightweight machine and a heavy duty machine. I found a used Adler 120 - 8A machine for $2,250.00 and I found a Singer 20U for $300.00. Would either of these machines be something I would need and, if so, are the prices good? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

well I have to admit this is the most user unfriendly blog system I have tried to use. Yes I am a newbie. I could complain more but I'll just get straight to it. I've just gotten a singer 29k2 and I'm searching for parts. Is there anyone who can help? Also, does anyone know why I can't adjust the stitch length up? I have slid the adjuster to the bottom but it makes no odds. Still, it is a really nice stitch and I mean on saddle skirting too. The thickness of the leather makes no difference whatsoever. It's a lovely old machine. I look forward to learning the proper way to use it. Advice anyone???

  6. Hello, I was wondering if there are any other leathercraft stores other than; Tandy Lather Factory and Hobby Lobby.

I do custom leather work primarily focusing on saddles. Recently I obtained 8 antique saddles in a deal. There was a Hess and Hopkins, Leddys, Jumbo, and JC Higgins with others very old but no makeres marks. I have just got some time on my hands and began tearing down the Leddy's to clean it up. I have seen 100's of saddles and the trees they're built on. Today was a first for me. Hopefully someone can spread some light on this one for me. Everything is normal about it except the tree bars. Where the stirrup slots generally are there is a semi circle cut into the bar with a place for a machine screw to be screwed in. Instead of the stirrups having straps they are cut off at the top of the sweats with a hole to place the screw through and connect it to the tree bar. This tree was built like this because the rawhide the covers the tree itself is fabricated for this function. Does anyone have any prior experience with a tree constructed like this. Also if anyone collects antique saddles let me know. Thanks in advance for any help.
