How Much Leather To Buy For First Holster Project?

Recommended Posts

I'm just starting out at leather working and managed to buy a bag of veg. tan leather pieces on a local auction site.

While this will get me through a few small projects as I build up my skill level, I would really like to make a few OWB holsters and my pieces are not going to be big enough.

I made up a pattern tonight for a rail framed Sig P266 "avenger" style holster that is about 10in by 9in (240mm x 200mm)

Google tells me this is about half a square foot of leather, so I'm thinking that if I buy 2sq feet of 6/7 oz leather then I should have enough for two or three holsters?

Cheers,

Jeremy

P.S. I was schooled in metric, anything (other than inch pipe sizing, calibres and wire gauges) is quite foreign to me...

2 ft should do ya and here are several good books that can show you how to make them and weight of leather, etc. Good luck.

Jagged, personally I feel that 6/7oz leather would be a bit light for what you are wanting to do. For me, i would use 8.9 oz. I use 6/7 with a 3/4 oz lining in my Avenger style holsters for any 'decent' sized firearm. Some, however, feel that I overbuild. Here's a pic of an Avenger type that I put together. Mike

Just go ahead and get a double shoulder of 8/9 oz.

That way, you'll have enough left over to make all the holsters your friends ask for, too......
