How Long & Wide Do You Cut Your Straps For Iwb Holsters?

Recommended Posts

I've been working on several different holster designs over the past 6 months and have finally settled on several that I think I will use.

However, the problem is that I cannot find a happy medium between strap width and length using 7/8 oz. Herman Oak. I just can't seem to find the right strap for me.

What do you cut your straps to?

Thanks

kinda hard to answer w/o seeing the pattern-I do think 7/8 0z HO is a little heavy for the strap.

5 5/16" long x 7/8" wide, wholes drilled 3/8 from end and 5/8 from end respectively. That's how I do it. I used to make them a bit shorter but those were not compatible with heavy gun belts. I agree 7/8 is a little heavy.

I have some 5 oz. backed leather. Would that work best for straps?

If not ... what would you suggest?

For a 1.5" belt loop, mine are 7/8" wide and 5-1/4" long. Snap placement will affect length. My snaps are approx 7/16" from the tip of the loop to the center of the snap.

I used to use 6/7 oz leather for the loops, then one of the guys I work with asked for a heavier loop - so I used 8/9 oz on his. A couple other guys saw his and wanted the heavier loops on theirs. I've been using 8/9 oz exclusively for the last year without any complaints. Most of the commercially available ones I've seen appear to be about 6 oz.
