I was watching Chuck Burrows' excellent DVDs about sheath and holster making. These I highly recommend, by the way.

A lot of American leathercrafters use 'Barge Cement'. Now I understand it isn't boat-building glue  but I'd like to find out what the UK equivalent is....

Is it simply a solvent based rubber cement? A standard contact adhesive? or is it something else?

I have a great adhesive I use called 'Thixofix'. It's basically thick Evo-stick that won't run, even on a vertical surface. It's good because you can put it exactly where you need it.

What do my fellow Brits use?

Cheers,

Karl

Hi Karl,

I not a Brit, but I answer anyhow (I live in Gemany, but my Grandfather was a true Brit :-).

Do you know that barge cement is also available in the UK ?? You can get it directly from Tandy UK if you want. Check this out

Tandyleather UK

Hope this helps.

BTW I use the Eco-Flo Leather Welt, wich is water based leathercraft cement. Works quiet good, but I don´t have huge experiences with other products.

Cheers,

Marcel

Hate to say it, Karl, but I use Barge... I can't find anything that will beat it. I buy it from Tandy in Wolverhampton. Take a tip and buy the smallest quantity you can manage with as it does 'go off' - also buy yourself a nice big tin of thinners - invaluable when you drip it on a half finished job... keep it well away from naked flames!

I tried Evo Stik and it didn't do the trick for me...

I do have a pot of 'white' wood glue that I use a lot but can't remember the make - I got it from a timber yard.

I have used Thixofix in the past - did you know the solvent for that stuff used to be called 'Kumzoff' or something very similar - I can't imagine why they changed the name... frankly, I prefer Barge.

I'm no expert for sure but I do live in the UK! - For the limited times I use glue I use either superglue to 'spot weld' things in place or UHU Extra. I got my first from Aldi or Lidl but as they only do limited runs I started to trawl the net to find some more - thankfully they have started to sell it in hobbycraft :spoton:

I like the fact that it works like a glue stick to apply but acts like a contact adhesive and is pretty strong. The majority of my strength comes from the stitching so find it convenient as it is easy to apply and you cant spill it! :yeah:

Thanks for the help everyone.

I'll try Tandy for Barge.

Happy New Year,

Karl
