How to make a "RATTLESNAKE KNOT"

Recommended Posts

I just noticed a knot that is being used on western headstalls. They call it a rattlesnake knot. I know nothing about knots or braiding but am interested in learning. You can see the headstalls if you go to www.nrsworld.com and then go to tack, then headstalls. I believe it is at the top of page 3. It says Leather Browband headstall w/ Rattlesnake knot. I have a feeling that this is not a new knot, but maybe just given a different name. I would like to learn how to make one of these knots. If anybody can help me with this I would appreciate it. Thanks

I found the items but don't really see much in the way of knots. Do they mean the knots on the end, those look like the terminal knot that has been of some discussion of late. The two sets of reins both labeled "Rattlesnake" one has a terminal on the end the other a slit braid.

Yes the knots they are referiing to are the ones at the ends. So is that knot a terminal knot.. Is there are good picture explantion anywhere that describes how to tie a terminal knot. Is that for sure what it is?

In braiding we would call it a terminal knot since that is what it is called in the Bruce Grant book. In rope tying or nautical books it would be called a wall or crown knot.

One of THE very best

On amazon.com a used book site. They list 3 different books by Grant. Which one would be best for a beginner. One of them is about braiding cowbay tack which is what i am most interested in. Would this be too complex for a beginner?

Thanks

Here's the two books by Bruce Grant on Amazon

Leather-Braiding

This is the condensed version of the book below in paperback. Basically all the projects taken out and just knots and braiding.

/Encyclopedia-Rawhide-Leather-Braiding

I'd say the Encyclopedia is sort of our bible. While there are a lot of books that have been published since these, this is the one everyone has on the shelf. I have a love / hate relationship with this book as I think most beginners do but it is probably not the book or the author just me trying to get my head around what is being shown. Patience is probably the most important thing since you probably won't get "it" on the first try. I like to say "I can show you how to braid, but only time can teach you".

Good Luck, John

Yeah that makes sense to me. I may have to work on the patience thing. Thanks for your help. It sounds like the paperback may be the way to go to learn a few basics huh?

hey Bubba

just my two cents if you really want to make tack then just buy the Encyclopedia of rawhide and leather braiding its a couple of bucks more but in the long run you will want to learn how to make "stuff" no tjust braids and knots. i started with this book and alot of well known braiders out there quote it as their begginings. it basically has the other two books incorporated into it along with some adittional notes the author included in it. it was his last book on braiding before he passed away. really recommend it even for begginers some other books can teach you different but its like anything it all depends on your effort. i actually have numerous books on tack making and several quote this same author. well enough rambling i sound like a salesman. good luck

Here is what is better known as a 4 strand terminal knot, or stopper knot. It takes on the form of a turks head. But the original was a single strand chinese button knot. Which lead to the 1 strand divided in half to make a 2 strand version. You will notice that the 4 strand version use the crowning technique to achieve the same look as the 2 strand and single strand versions.

If a person so desired, they could even extend the two strand version and the 4 strand version even longer, or wider depending on how you view it.

Info for any braider: Go to Gail Hough's web site and get one of her books or go to marlinspikeknotworks.com and get one of Black's videos or go to KHWW (Knot Heads World Wide) and join (free). There are also a bunch of videos on YouTube. I have all of Grant's books and the Ashley Book of Knots as well. All of these are good. People learn differently and sometimes a video or a color illustration can help. Good Luck and remember - the world needs more braiders. Stan
