Cavalry or Artillery McClellan?

Recommended Posts

Hi all:

I just purchased this 1904 McClellan saddle - is it an artillery model? I see it has D-rings on the cantle and pommel. They seem pretty small for connecting to tack for a train of artillery horses.

Thanks,

P.

You can tell from photos. This one is an artillery saddle. The difference between the two is that an artillery saddle has that d ring in the center (front and back ) of the saddle. That d ring was used to attach the Y strap that hooked to the artillery piece for hauling it around.

Hope this helps

David
