Small Offcuts And What To Do With Them.

Recommended Posts

After throwing away hundreds of small scraps of leather which i always hated to do, it finally dawned on me what i could do with a lot of them. I often like to reinforce my rivets and poppers with small leather washers which i usually make as i am making each project. But now instead of throwing scraps away i make different sized washers out of them, ready for when i need them. Now all i need to do is find a uSe for the offcuts from making the washers. :)

You could make a knife with a stacked leather handle, though unless you're keen on knife making you might think it's more trouble than it's worth

Put 'stacked leather knife handle' into YouTube

British Blades has a tutorial. Towards the top lhs of the homepage there is an index box or menu, click on 'tutorials'

One thing you can do is put a bunch of them in a mesh bag and stick it under your car seat. It is the only thing that REALLY restores new car smell that I know of.

I've used em for making sure the punch is the correct size for a rivet. Also buffer pieces to prevent clamp marks on pieces that need held after applying glue. Heck I've even wrote measurements on them when a piece of paper is farther away.

This is a topic dear to my heart. I get far too many small bits of leather left over after projects. I use them in a number of ways but I'm always looking for more.

Here are a few ideas:

Key fobs (several patterns)

Scout woggles (scarf rings)

Archery tabs (finger guards)

Longbow string keepers

Price tickets for shows

Belt loops

Loops for the back of belt pouches

Elbow patches for jackets

Applique shapes for bracelets

Reinforcement for the corners of bags

Hi ukray, some great ideas there thank you, just thought of another, if i ever get a makers mark made it would be nice to make some leather tabs with a stamp on it, problem is i find the makers stamps quite expensive to have made.

Another use for small off-cuts; put into small self-seal plastic bags and sell for a $1 or £1 to women who do the hobby of scrap-booking or card making. They are always looking for these sorts of items to adorn their projects.

I make board games, and the game pieces, so I punch out small discs from off-cuts for the bases for the game pieces
