Question: What Are The Traditional Chinese/japanese/korean Leather Tools

Recommended Posts

Does anyone know what are the Traditional Chinese/Japanese/Korean leather tools?

I am interested in their version of tools over the western styles.

They are generally all the same in function and are very similar. French tools - vergez in my opinion are the highest quality besides vintage, new american custom tools are a close second in the list, dixon then japanese modern tools.

The korean tools from custom makers are impossible to find, you may need korean contacts to find them.

For knives the Japanese chisel type knives (white steel version) are one of those rare items that are worth triple the price, I have the cheaper 15 dollar version and its just as good as my custom clicker knife. Olfa knives and rotary are also better than common blades.

Japanese learned their leather craft from Korea and China, so their tools are very similar to each other hence I am asking about all 3. Just with their added 2 cents.

But I am trying to avoid modern type tools, so rotary tools (or those cutters) is off my list and pretty much all the replaceable blades type of tools also. Unless one goes into a leather store in Japan/Korea/China, all we see online is all those modern convince tech tools.

All I know the knives are a tad bit different compared to the west, kinda like one tool that can do multiple things once the user is use to the tool unlike modern tools which has one application per tool and one cannot change the usage depending on how uses the tool.

Hence I am asking here.

I believe this page will show the types of tools you are reffering to http://goodsjapan.com/leathercraft-knives-blades--sharpeners-28-c.asp If you google Traditional Japanese leather craft you will find some video's showing craftsman using the types of knives and other tools you are refering to.

Thanks, I do know that the straight knife/angled knife is preferred over the Round Knife. Don't know what else is traditional, being they don't have a traditional tools section.

Ill have to buy the 3 leather books then... unless someone that has it can glance over the book on the tools they use and tell me if they use traditional methods which will help me decide if I want to buy the book or not.

Leather Craft Technique Encyclopaedia, Vol 1 Japanese Leathercraft book

Leather Craft Technique Encyclopaedia, Vol 2 Japanese Leathercraft book

Leather Craft Technique Encyclopaedia, Vol 3 Japanese Leathercraft book

from http://goodsjapan.com for the original japanese books or the Chinese translated versions of those 3 books which normally costs 1/2 the cost if you can find it but some translations does not carry over well.

According to the descriptions it says those 3 books were them basing on the 1960's and 1970's publications but redone with modern pictures and instructions, so it has less of the modernized tools and more older methods.

I know some of the contents uses some of the traditional methods mainly the knife based on the pictures, the later series (like 9+) uses modern tools like the adjustable groover, skiver razor blade and the swivel knife but I have no idea which books starts to move over to the newer tools or if it is littered mix of both modern and traditional tools through out the series.
