rawhide1 Report post Posted September 5, 2009 As some may recall I have a Pfaff 1245 and I appreciate all the help in the past. I have a new question how big a needle can I run in that machine and how heavy of thread. I'm using 138 on top and 69 on the bottom right now with I think a size 19 0r 20 needle(needle size could be wrong as I'm at work and can't look at it). The reason I ask is I'm sewing two pieces of 15oz. bridle leather together and while it's working I'm getting some needle deflection I think. Which can turn a 5 min. job into a 45 min. job and a whole lot of cussing which my wife doesn't appreciate. I realize I'm probably pushing the machine to it's limits but it's the only one I got. Cobra Steve Report post Posted September 5, 2009 Mike, for that thick of leather, you should use a #23 or #24 needle, with a 207 on top, and a 138 in the bobbin. Be careful if you choose the #24 needle because depending on the needle deflector on your hook, (which may be slightly bent) it may not do it's job. The needle deflector is designed to do one thing....slightly deflect the needle so the point of the hook will not hit the needle causing the needle to break, or worse, damage the hook. I would try a #23 needle first, and turn the hand wheel by hand to see if there is any deflection before you start to sew. When you do start to sew, sew slow until the job is done. Good Luck!
