I started on a new project yesterday, so I thought I'd post some progress photos as I went along to keep me moving.

If I'm making obvious mistakes along the way, feel free to say something! Positive comments welcome too, as always.

Yesterday, I cut the body for the project from purple leather. I'll line it with chocolate suede.

Discovered skiving suede makes for weak edges, so I had to make abrupt short skives. Anyone have experience with this or better suggestions?

Also started with Chocolate dye on some veg tan pieces. Treating the leather today.

Added another photo in the gallery, but realized I had a fatal design flaw, so back to the drawing board for the pink section, and the chocolate tabs. So, as they say, one step forwards, two steps back! Still waiting on my stitching irons, so can't sew it up anyhow.

Monica,

Everything working with leather but the book keeping has been enjoyable so far. Managed to redo the pink section, it looks much better this time around. Also redid the chocolate tabs, will post photos soon as I can. New irons are at least a week out, so had to make do with the old Tandy iron I have in the toolbox.

More bits and pieces of the project coming together. I have ordered some stitching irons of different sizes, so I want to wait until they get here before I decide what size and color of thread to use.

Also, almost immediately after taking this last photo, I managed to dump my bottle of neatsfoot oil all over it, and the suede soaked it right up. If anyone knows how to get neatsfoot out of suede, let me know! I ended up remaking the pink section, which would be the third time to do that so far. One step forward, two steps back has been a fitting description of this little project!

Made a significant amount of progress yesterday. Still need to finish edging, and made plenty of errors, so pretty much a practice prototype.

Stitching on suede I have discovered is difficult, as well as soft chrome tan leather (the pink material). Small stuff, like the stitched chocolate dyed tabs, really highlight inconsistencies.

I am wondering, since I used the same thread throughout, and the veg tanned section looks larger than the chrome tanned section, if I should have used different sized threads to try to make it look the same?

Well, this piece met a sad end, drowned by water from the firefighter's hose. Fortunately, the ipad was not inside, so it did not suffer the same fate. If and when I make another, I'll put up a photo!
