Need A Pattern For A "cows Knee" For Flintlock Rifle

Recommended Posts

Howdy Y'all,

I have a customer who is into the authentic 18th century blackpowder experience. He asked me if I could make him an hand sewn "cow's leg" to cover the flint lock &keep it dry.

Does anybody have a pattern, or a couple of decent pix?

I thank you in advance for any help proffered, advice given.

George, Don't know if this helps at all, but I did this for a customer to cover a Sharps replica a couple of years ago. I realize that it's not the period of which you speak, but it may give you an idea or two. This is made of a combination of deer and elk hides. Hope this helps a little Mike

WOW!

Mike that's beautiful. Now I know why they call it a cow's leg. because i had thought the customer described a small piece that covered just the flint and pan. But what you have LOOKS like a cow's leg, makes much more sense now.

Thanx for the great photos & for clearing that up.rockon.gif

I beleive the customer was asking for the right item.

He would need a Lock Cover(cows knee) when hunting with his Flintlock in bad weather.

hope you can make it by the photo...

Luke: Thanks from katsass. I don't get any call (yet) for black powder stuff except for holsters for percussion guns. This adds to my knowledge about the flint stuff a little bit, thanks again. Mike

Thats more in line with what i imagined he was asking for. Thank you Luke, the picture is just what i have been searching for, & will enable me to make just what my customer needs. i love the deep, rich color of the piece. I should have known to start my search here, I'd have found it a lot sooner. yeah.gif Do you happen to know approx, how tall it is at the peak?

Here's my first attempt at a Cows knee. I made it from pliable leather so you could stash it in your possibles bag. The last pic has it wrapped on my Henry rifle to give me a sense of scale, seems like it will fit. Thanx again for all the help and friendly advice
