Head knife (Jolly knives)

Recommended Posts

Years ago I had the opportunity to purchase 4 knives. They have JR stamped on them. The steel is exceptionally good, at least I like them. I'd like to get some more and know not where to find the maker. Can anyone help with contact information. I believe he called himself Jolly knives. The memory don't work as well anymore, help with this would be appreciated.

Much thanks

I believe these head knives where oringally made by a maker in montana, by the name of Lineman, not sure on the spelling, I think he sold the company name to another maker. I understand they where real good round knives.Dont know if they are made anymore.

howdy Bob;

The maker is Bob Jolly, he did make some nice knifes over the years, I believe that he still makes a few round knifes, although he mostly is making hunting type knife nowadays. I do not have his contact info but if you Call Stan Groff Saddley in High River, Ab he can get you the contact info, Stan and Bob are very good friends. Stan quite often has a knife or two from Bob for sale in his shop.

Steveh;

These are a different knife that Bob is talking about. The Linemans (spelling) were usually marked LBL if I remember right, (I am in the house not the shop so I can't look at the knife to see for sure what the markings are) they were also very nice round knifes.

Some of the best round knifes I have seen and use are knifes by Bill Buschman, I could dig up his contact info if you are interested.

I am used to the Jolly knives, cause thats most all I've ever had. The other reason is they're not too thick. I've seen some knives are thick as a hoe. It takes three days of grinding to get where it'll cut good.

Any contact information of anybody that makes good knives would be appreciated.

Hi Bob,

Bill Buchman of Bend, Oregon makes very good knives that are thin.

Bill Buchman's number direct is 541-382-8851. Order direct from him if you want a smaller handle that is better when you "palm" the knife.

Art, thank you a bunch for this referal.... My only question to you is... how well do these knives hold an edge?

Many thanks again for this help.

Bob

Hi Bob,

I usually answer on board for archive and search purposes.

Bill Buchman's knives are pretty hard and hold an edge well, hardness probably in the high 50s on the C scale. I use the flesh side of a piece of leather charged with Herb Dunkle's Yellowstone compound (used by woodcarvers mainly) and strop on that often. It is not really stropping, because the yellowstone cuts some but it is kind of like that technique wise. Using this technique, I have never had to re-edge a Buchman knife. Warning, don't lift the knife at the end of your strop stroke. Also, these blades are thin and you need to be careful with big blades not to get too much prying action on them. That said, I have never broken or chipped one.

Bill is a great knifemaker and makes more patterns than most. Herb is also a good person, I have his contact info as:

I talked with Bill Buchman, he won't be making knives for new customers. Too bad cause I've heard he makes such good knives too. If anyone has one extra they'll spare, I'd still like to get one. :head_hurts_kr:

Did you try Big Sky Tool and Die, they used to handle them for him and may have some.
