Head Knife Sheath Welt?

Recommended Posts

I got a new head/round knife and want to make a sheath up for it so my shop visitors don't gash themselves when "looking" at my stuff. The knife is only about 1/16" thick or so.... for those who have made a sheath for theirs, did you skive a tiny welt or what did you do? I need to figure this out before I cut the leather because I was going to cut it about 1/2" bigger for the welt. I can't figure out how I'd cut/skive a 8oz piece down to about 1/16", evenly.

Also.. show your head knife sheaths here too!

Thanks guys!

IMO for that thin of a blade should not need a welt, unless it is for decoration. For my first one I did not have one, but it is just scrap leather to protect me and other family members (nosy cat) from getting cut.

I will be doing one for a "show peice" some time before October.

I would definatly have a welt because it protects the thread from the sharp edge of the knife. I would use some thinner leather like 5 to 6 oz. and put a strap that goes across the top of the blade. hope this helps
