Meeting & Demonstration: "suits Of Armor"

Recommended Posts

The Longhorn Trail Leather Guild located in Austin (Central) Texas held their monthly meeting last night. Besides the business aspect of the meeting, we had the priviledge of having one of our own members Alexis and her apprencetice Jason put on a demonstration on 'Suits of Armor." Alexis is a graphic designer for a major video game maker by day and Renaissance fan by night.

Alexis is a self taught leather worker for specific arena of leather work. Alexis got involved in this type of suit building after doing a "cold call" on a well known renaissance artist here in the Austin area. She kept asking for his help in teaching her to build these suits, but he hesitated until she saw his website. Due to her regular job, she was able to find the flaws on this website and presenting the artist with a plan to revamp his website in exchange for an apprencticeship. They are still friends and consult with each other on different projects. Alexis and her instructor will have a booth at this year's Austin area "Sherwood Forest Faire (http://www.sherwoodforestfaire.com/).

I have attached just a few photographs of her demo and her lesson on how to make a basic arm bracer. Alexis provided those in attendance with a signature pattern for an arm bracer. She has allowed me to share it with those here on 'Leather worker' with the agreement that this pattern be used for personal use only and not to be sold as a product.

Note: Just in case you caught it (Galdiator fans); the white suit is Marcus Aurelis' suit of armor depicted in the movie.

We are planning on putting up a video on the demonstration, as well as, a photo album for this session. Alexis provided the guild with a full size basic set of patterns for a suit. The guild hasn't decided if we will offer these patterns for sale in "full size," but we are considering it for all interested (at cost plus shipping).

Stay tuned to our leather guild website!

Next month: How to use a round and head knife with hands-on demonstration and possibly a website tutorial.

Thanks for looking ~
