EDIT:  This happens frequently with 3rd party hosting.  SO DON'T DO IT!

If the photo is deleted from the hosting site, then you are left with a broken link.  Also if someone closes, or re-organizes their hosting site, the photos are all gone from leatherworker.net.  Some of the threads and posts become useless as there is no longer any illustrations.

It is far better to re-size your photos to fit, so they will stay with your post and complement the text.

EDIT Feb 25 2023:

This is an example from this thread of what happens to many 3rd party hosted photos.

Post below has been severely edited to remove extraneous material.

I just wanted to add a way to upload much larger pictures, for people who want to show more detail on their work.

There is no need to compress the pictures with this method, although this takes up a lot of room on a thread, depending on the size of the pictures.

Steps:

EDITED:  Method DELETED

Note: To delete the pictures, delete or move them from your 3rd party account, and they will be deleted from any forum you posted them on.

EDIT:  This is why we have quite a number of bad links to 3rd party hosted photos.  User changed permissions, location, or deleted their photos, or host has gone out of business or changed their business practices.

No tools here to rotate that I have seen.  The photo is likely from a smart phone or other camera that saves the orientation and lots of other info as EXIF data inside the digital photo.  You might try another photo editor to rotate and save the photo.  IrfanView might work for you if you also download and install the EXIF plugin.  It's a free download.  Many browsers do not support EXIF data so won't rotate the photo to its original orientation.  Some info here about EXIF https://www.makeuseof.com/tag/exif-photo-data-find-understand/

You can use ExifTool https://sno.phy.queensu.ca/~phil/exiftool/ to remove the EXIF data.  Install the software on your computer and run it at the command line example exiftool -all= SourceFile.jpg and substitute the photo's filename in place of "SourceFile".

I see that Windows 10 File Explorer will allow you to edit the EXIF data.  Right click on the file and select properties, Details.  I haven't tried it so you are on your own to experiment with it.  Play with a copy.

Photoshop and LightRoom have a file menu item to "save file for web".  It removes personal data.  Haven't checked to see what it leaves unchanged.

Resizing photos to post on leatherworker.net

There are several pieces of software and methods you may use to resize photos:

An Online site http://www.shrinkpictures.com/ or another website for batch resizing http://www.shrinkpictures.com/

Download and use a free program called Irfanview for your PC https://www.irfanview.com/

Download and use FastStone Photo Resizer http://www.faststone.org/FSResizerDetail.htm

On the iPad use an app called Image Size

On many SmartPhones, you can set the size of photo the camera takes

In MS Outlook, you can email photos to yourself and set the max size.  It will then resize photos before sending and you can then use those photos to post.

And if you search the web, you will find many more methods to accomplish the same thing.

For most photos to be posted on the web, you can use a size of 800 x 600 pixels and have plenty of resolution to show what you want to show.  At that resolution, you can post hundreds of photos in a single post if you want to.

Please avoid the use of 3rd party hosting sites to post a link due to problems with the various sites policies where they block hosting, and due to the fact that if you delete, move, or change permissions, the link goes dead resulting in broken links and useless posts.

Ok it’s not working for me. I’m selecting a photo from the photo library on my phone and I get a message that I can’t upload more than 1.46 mb. But I don’t know how to resize it.

Most smart phone pictures are now over 2 MB.  So have to be resized.  If you are re-setting the file/picture size the camera saves, you have to do that before you take the photo.  Have you tried emailing it to yourself and selecting the size to mail?

Have you tried "An Online site http://www.shrinkpictures.com/" It should work with your phone.  I see it is primarily for FB posts, and they refer to another website for batch resizing http://www.shrinkpictures.com/

I have various programs on my computer for editing photos. One of them is also installed on my Galaxy S5 smartphone. It is the previously mentioned FastStone Photo Resizer. This program ("App" for kids, or "Software" for people my age) lets you crop, resize, sharpen, rotate , rename and reduce the quality. Cropping, resizing and reducing the quality all reduce the file size.  Using just crop, resize and quality reduction (to 80%) can reduce the original file size by 100:1. If a resized photo loses sharpness, add some using the Preview function. I find that adding 15% sharpness is plenty for web sized photos.

Thanks Wizcrafts, I'll try that. Hopefully this old timer can figure it out.

I emailed the required pix to myself & selected the low resolution option which was fine to then post with no other adjustments needed.

For iPad/iPhone users, take a look at these links for information on reducing your picture's file size so you can post it.

https://osxdaily.com/2014/04/21/resize-photos-from-iphone-mail/

This one requires installation of an app.  https://www.imore.com/how-crop-resize-photos-your-iphone-and-ipad

This website seems to be a good solution also, you can upload photos and choose file size, and you get them downloaded in a zip-file. https://bulkresizephotos.com/

Computer monitors are not capable of seeing all the information in a photo so most of it is just wasted and takes up bandwidth. I use an old version of Fireworks. Crop the picture, resize to 600 pixels and reduce resolution to 70% or even less and no one will see any difference. Remember to save it. Unless you intend to print from a picture at sometime, if your computer keeps an original size copy as well as the resized one you might want to delete it because those will use up a lot of memory/space.

My methods and hardware

1. I use an old Fujipix S5600 camera, permanently set up for close-up pictures

1a. The camera takes at 5 mp. ISO/ASA is adjusted according to available lighting but its generally at 100 or 200

2. I use an old photo processing program, Paint Shop Pro. I got it free on a give-away disc back in about 1994

3. I put the photos through the PSP and initially save the original photo to my computer using the suffix 01 eg, Dice Cup, 01. This is backed up on a DVD disc

3a then I edit the photo, cropping it, adjusting contrast etc. This is saved as 01a (eg; Dice Cup, 01a)

3b. If I want the photo for this forum I resize the photo to about 360 pixies width and save that as 01LWs  (eg; Dice Cup, 01LWs)

4. When I want to put the photo on this form I just use the 'choose files' option, and search out that 01LWs photo. I preview my posting and if the photo is too large or too small I go back to PSP,  bring in the 01LWs, resize it and rename it 01LWss or 01LWsl. That way I have multiple copies of the same photo, in case any get corrupted or something

5. hit 'submit reply' when ready and jobs done

I've been doing it this way for over 20 years (tho not on LW, but other forums) and I ain't gonna change now no how

This is a prime example of why you should post your photos here rather than on a 3rd party host.

I just got a great tip from our sewing machine guru, @Uwe

A simple “Samsung photo resize” search reveals these instructions: https://www.samsung.com/sg/support/mobile-devices/how-to-resize-photos-in-the-gallery-app-on-your-galaxy-phone/

To summarize the instructions, open your Gallery. Click on the image you need to resize. The image will open on-screen. Under the image, click on the pencil icon (Edit). On the Edit screen, click on the three dots to open an options menu. From the options, choose Resize. There are several radio button options starting at 20% on my Samsung Galaxy A53. Choose the amount of reduction you want, then click on Done. Now, click on Save on the upper right of the screen. Or, click Revert to unsave the resize. A text screen will popup asking if you really want to save the resized image over the original. If you don't need the large original, click on Save on the bottom right. But, if you want to save the original, follow the instruction in the text box to save the resized image as a copy.

I found similar instructions for resizing photos on an iPhone...

  1. Open the Photos App, and scroll your screens to find the image you want to adjust image size.
  2. Tap the image and find the “Edit” icon on the upper-right corner of the screen.
  3. Tap it and select the third crop and rotate image icon on the bottom of the screen.
  4. Find the third gray rectangular icon on the top of the screen and tap it.
  5. You will see lots of options to resize images. You can customize the image size as you want, make square images, resize image wallpaper size, and other photo sizes.
  6. Choose one image size ratio you want, and apply it to your images.
  7. After you have resized images, tap “Done” to save your images to your iPhone.
