Leather Shop Receipt From 1893

Recommended Posts

Here's an old receipt from a leather store in Philadelphia.

I'm from Philly and spent a few years bartending right around the corner from where the shop was located before moving up to NYC.

Incidentally, it's right around the corner from Betsy Ross' house. She would have been around 140 when this receipt was written!

I'm not sure what they bought, but they had money to spend, if they spent $117.19 back then at a leather shop. It's all I can do to spend that much now days.

That was my thought as well...

Probably had to have a farm wagon to haul it all home!

One key thing to notice is that the receipt seems to be to a Company rather than an individual.

Looks more like a bank draft than a receipt from that era...interesting find

Edit: Old Ebay listing for the page notes that it was a bank draft to the Curwensville Bank...likely the Leather Shop making a deposit or paying a loan. Fun stuff looking through these things and speculating what they were for. ;)
