Saddlebag Backing Material

Recommended Posts

Hey all!

I am in the middle of doing a repair and restoration of a set of vintage saddlebags. The back of the saddle bags have this hard rubberized material. It is really tore up and on one side. It has been worn to much to sew the leather back to. My question is does anyone know where you can get this material, they use for the back, or maybe a substitute?

Thanks :helpsmilie:

Not 100% sure here, but to me it almost looks the same thickness and consistency of mud flaps off of a truck. Maybe check the local hardware stores (small mom n' pop shops as well as big box stores) for rubber sheeting rubber mats?

Thanks for the info KurseD! A mudflap didn't even cross my mind. I have a buddy that is a parts man for a truck supply company picking me up a mudflap on Monday.

Cool, I hope it works. If not, like I said as well, check some of the hardware places around town and see if you can find another suitable rubber.... wait... those last three words did not sound right at all... :)
