Novice Seeking Advice

Recommended Posts

Hello,

I'm a woodworker that's interested in making some custom items for my truck and tool storage. I believed the technique I'm interested in is called buckstitching, like a baseball glove. Ultimately I'd like to recover the bench seat in my truck and make custom tool pouches that affix to the rear of the seat and back wall of the cab so that when I fold the seat forward all of my tools are easily accessible. It need not be the fanciest job but my tired seat needs some love and I'd really like it if my tools didn't bang together sitting on the floor of the cab. These are heavy striking tools like axes.

What kind of leather for upholstery?

For built in tool storage?

To hold the weight on the back of the seat?

What books should I buy to learn this?

What tools do I need?

Thanks for your help!

Buck stitching looks like the white stitches on the photo on this page.

http://www.buckstitched.com/

Is that the look you are going for?

I'd say that's about right. I like the really western look.

Ok then. For buck stitch you'll need at least this e-book. https://www.leathercraftlibrary.com/p-1123-lacing-and-stitching-for-leathercraft.aspx?

3/16" thonging chisel (I like the angled ones) 3/16" single chisel

locking needles

3/16" flat leather lace. (white is hard to find btw)

scissors

Read the book first it will give what else you need...

As for the leather... can't advise you on the upholstery leather... that's really something you want to see and feel.
