Question Concerning Purchased Designs

Recommended Posts

There are many internet sites that sell images through clip art and pattern books (some with CDs). If I purchase these, am I buying the right to use these as I please? For example, if I bought an image of a horse could I then copy the horse (and subsequently carve) the image onto a leather book cover and sell it? Thanks.

Take a look at the web sites or books terms and conditions. Often they will say 'royalty free' or 'copyright free' artwork if they are distributing it expecting you to use it in your own product. In that case you are fine. Other sites (and I think this is common with photo distributing sites) will require you to pay a use royalty or maintain their copyright when you use it. Dover makes a lot of clip are type books where they explicitly say the material is free for use. In those cases you should be fine.
