Civil War flat type holster

I've had an inquiry from someone wanting a civil war flat type holster for a Remington 58 copy. I've never built this type of holster before but I'm up for the challenge. Are there any tips or tricks I should know about? This is a new ball game for me. And to make things even harder, I don't have a dummy gun or model to work off of.

are you saying 'flat type' or 'flap type'? I've never heard of a 'flat type' cw holster, but the standard cw holster does have a flap that fastens (generally) with a sam browne button closure. Google: civil war holster, 58 caliber Remington, pistol, 1861 new model army pistol... and anything that may relate. But go first to Dixie Gunworks (www.dixiegunworks.com ...- I think): they have pictures of the particular & similar cw model replica items so you can get an idea of what they look like. They may even have pictures of generic holsters for those similar pistols. The holster is itself pretty simple, as you'll see from the pictures.

Can I build this holster without a model to mold? I'm not boning or wet molding in detail, but is a model necessary for the general shape?

Al Stohlman's book on holster shows you how to do it. My first ever holster was a carved flap holster I designed for a small pistol and it came out great.
