  1. I have received an enquiry about white leather belts with black lettering. I use veg tan bridle leather and use fiebings oil or spirit dyes. I will stamp the letters first but whats best for white? I want something durable and that I can paint over for the black letting, I assume acrylic will be the best for this. Is there a white spray paint that gives a good durable coating? or is it acrylic all the way. Im afraid as acrylic sits on the surface that it will just peel over time. any advice greatly appreciated
  2. Hello, I just added an alphabet set to my collection and looking to stamp on a belt. I want the letters to be a different colour to the belt. How do I get for example tan letters on black belt? or green letters on a brown belt? I am using 3.5mm veg tan, I have fiebings dyes, some pro oil and some spirit based. I also have antique pastes. and resolene. Do I need acrylic paints?
  3. Hello I have just made a few straps, used water while burnishing the edges and some dropped onto the face in places and has now stained the straps. The straps are dyed with fieibings oil dye. Is there a way to remove the stains?
  4. I am interested in making some belts with alligator or croc skin, flat and horn back. Does any one know of a UK supplier of someone who can supply to the UK? I am also interested in trying other exotic skins so any supplier suggestions welcome. The closest I have got so far is Novalpina in Switzerland but cant find their website.
  5. Thanks Thor, looks like it would be better buying from Zack White with a few rolls. Whenever I order from ZW I have to ring them as the paypal link doesn't work. Maybe its because I'm in the UK.
  6. I am looking for a belt embossing machine. I have priced the industrial ones but out of my league at this stage. I know i have seen the hand cranked ones online somewhere but cant find them now. A UK supplier would be perfect. I think the machine uses brass rolls, also down the line I would like custom ones made. I know its not as quick and not heated like the factory ones but should be closer to my price range. This is what I am looking for, but this site has no prices! http://www.ivan.tw/index.php?route=product/product/detail&id=9692
  7. Can anyone recommend an alternative to gum trag for belt edges please. I use edge kote and have been using eco flow gum trag but one supplier no longer does it and a litre is about £30 from another. Just wondering if there is something else I can use just a good or better available in the UK.
  8. I have resolene so could try that Should I put neatsfoot on both sides?
  9. Thanks, should I apply neatsfoot oil to both sides? I don't have any resist and I want to dye it black, would this be ok? What does the resist do?
  10. Hello, I have been making belts for some time but recently made a dog collar, looked good at first but after a but if wear, getting wet etc. it has lost its initial good looks. I use veg tan leather from zack white, feibings oil dye and had put carnauba cream on it. I have just got some neatsfoot oil and would like to know best practice to make better quality dog collars. Should I apply neatsfoot oil first, then dye etc and finish again with the oil? Can I use carnauba cream to finish or both? Also I put tan Kote on reverse, what do people recommend? Thanks
  11. Do you mean use the pricking iron to completely go through both pieces? I am using veg tan David l, I have just looked at your etsy page and seen your card holder, this is similar to whatvibwant to make, how did you approach the stitching for that item?
  12. Thanks for that, do I use pva glue just to pin it?
  13. I am new to leather craft so please bear with me. I have some thin goat hide, approx 1mm thick and I made a card holder but the stitching is a mess. I used an awl and it was all fine in 2 side but the other was punctured and looks uneven. The leather is already dyed and I didn't groove first. I was looking at stitching chisels but not sure the best way forward for thin hides. What's the best way to stitch 2 pieces of 1mm leather together?
