This just might be the idea I will have to draw from, After the holidays, if smart phones abound as I propose they will !

I like the sewed-in magnets. Thanx, Wild Bill46

I'm a bit old fashioned - ever heard the word 'technophobe'? I haven't got a smartphone, and I wouldn't know how to use one if I had. So I wondered; do you think it's a good idea to have magnets so close to an electronic device?

Thank you, and yes I did my research since I was concerned about magnets too, but it doesn't appear to be a concern for smartphones and iPads. I have used magnets a number of times now and I don't feel concerned with them as a threat since I found through other forums online and through actual use that they don't pose a threat.

Take care,

Kevin

If you search for magnets here, you will find several threads about their usage. I have contributed to some of them with my observations and experience. The only risk for magnets is around magnetic stripped cards. And that is fairly low, but not quite non-existent. It takes an alternating magnetic field to wipe magnetic storage. Magnets and electronics are not a problem.

Smart phones and tablets used magnets in OEM covers and holsters to switch the screen off when the device is holstered or closed. The iPad covers attach to the iPad frame using strong magnets. SDRAM cards are safe too.

It is time to stop perpetuating the myths about magnets and electronics with the exception of CRTs, especially colour. Don't show your kids how the picture deforms and colours distort on the old fashioned picture tubes, unless you are ready to throw it in the junk, or spend money to have it degaussed (if you can find someone that will do that now!).

Good idea... i like it... The only thing I have to say, and it is not negative, is you should have a rare earth magnet and a small peice os metal. IMHO... but all in all it looks good and nice stiching

Tankerman, I ended up using the new style magnets that Tandy sells. They are pretty strong. I have been very happy with them, and they seem to work well with this project from what my customer tells me. I will look into the rare earth magnets though. I could probably work more towards a cleaner enclosure for the magnets next time. Thanks for the comments everyone.

Most of the shiny button magnets are rare earth. Some better than others. To get good holding power, magnet to magnet works best. I have used a strip of steel, but it does not hold well. The more leather between the magnet and "keeper", the poorer the holding power. So now I default to magnet to magnet.

Oh. I forgot to take that into my thoughts. magnet to magnet is better. lol. I guess I did not think it through. Still looks good.

I made one for myself a while back. Instead of sewing the magnets on the front, i skived out the leather on the backside to make a 'pit', then glued the magnet (with a thin strip of steel) in the pit, and then lined the inside with some nice pigskin.

The magnets don't have to be a real strong bond, it just has to hold enough to keep it from flappin' in the breeze, y'know? :)
