  1. I had a feeling that rollers were responsible. Do you know of any resources that explain how to adjust the rollers correctly?
  2. So I just received a Landis Model 30 from ebay and I have had a few concerns while trying it out. I wont get to all of them just yet, but my main concern right now is that when I split a piece of leather, it is getting tapered off at the end. I have tested this at various weights but it is definitely most dramatic when I am splitting at a lighter weight. When I got from 8oz to 6oz its not too bad. The majority of the piece will be split to 6oz but the tail end will be slightly thinner. But what really is nagging me is that when I go from say, 6oz to 4oz, the end of the piece tapers off to something very thing like 2oz or 1oz. I have tested various typer of leather, different widths of the pieces. It affects wide 4" pieces as much as narrow 1" pieces. Supposedly it is a new blade. I haven't sharpened it yet but have stropped it. Does anyone know what could be causing this. I am new to this tool and only played around with it for a couple of days. Any help is much appreciated.
  3. I just bought this awl from rocky mountain supply http://www.rmleathersupply.com/collections/tools/products/vergez-blanchard-diamond-awl-38mm its 2.3 mm wide at the widest point. It was the smallest one I found when shopping around. I am using it for my blanchard pricking iron (9spi).
  4. I have had the Vergez Blanchard L'indispensable knife for a few days now and I can't seem to get it very sharp. I am sharpening at 15 degree angle on 1000/3000 grit japanese whetstone, pulling back with one finger on the blade to ensure it evenly makes contact with the stone, while my other hand controls the backward and forward motion. I do around 20 strokes for each side of the blade and for both the 1000 grit and 3000 grit sides of the stone. I finish off by stropping it on my leather strop with green rouge. I have tried sharpening it about 3 times now and its not really getting me anywhere. I have tried looking at several guides/youtube videos trying to replicate the process as best as I can but to no avail. Can anyone see where I am going wrong? Is it technique, diamond hone vs whestone, proper knife position, more patience with this type of steel? Its getting frustrating spending so much on a knife when at this point my $2 xacto knife is out performing the $50 knife. Any help is much appreciated!
  5. So I have been using some manilla colored card stock for making patterns for various styles of wallets (different size cards slots, etc). The problem is that after a couple of times tracing around the pieces the card stock doesn't keep a firm edge to maintain an accurate trace. Any suggestions on a material that is easy to cut but can still hold up over multiple uses? Much appreciated, t
  6. I was hoping you guys could help me decide between a Osborne style clicker knife or a japanese style utility knife. Is there a lot of overlap in functionality between these knives or is one better for something then the other. I imagine that the clicker knife is much better for small tight cuts and the utility knife makes a good straight cut. But if you could only have one, which would it be. I would be using it mostly for cutting out pieces from patterns (wallets, bags, small accessories). Nothing too complicated though. Just want to gauge everyones opinions on the pros and cons of both.   7. Thanks for your advice. I do have a an exacto knife (#2 I think). Im not too happy with the way it cuts. The blade is pretty flimsy and i tend to bevel the cut, especially on curves. I was hoping that one of these knives I was looking at would be an answer to my problems but I guess in your experience it hasn't paid off. I know a lot of people here use these knives too. Like most things with leather work, it seems to be preference that dictates, not better or worse.

  9. Yeah. This would definitely make the holes cleaner. But would I still have to mark the stitches on the flesh side? Is there anyway around working on the flesh side?
  10. I tried that but it still causes me to make the punch from the flesh side on the bottom piece leaving me with those gnarly exit holes
  11. So I got the craftsha 2.5 diamond chisel and am having trouble lining up the diamond pattern on the two pieces of leather I'm stitching. When I make the holes, I punch them from grain to flesh side making the diamonds face \ \ \ . But very soon i realized when punching both pieces like this the diamonds overlap like this \ /. I found that I can just punch one of the pieces from the flesh side out to the grain but the punch leaves a pretty unsightly gash. I tried all sorts of combinations, so I come to you pros for advice. Do i just stick with punching one piece of leather through the flesh side or is there a way i can punch both pieces through the grain side and have my stitch diamonds line up? or do people just sew the leather with the diamond holes overlapping like this \ /
