What Type / Color Dye Should I Get?

Recommended Posts

Hi Folks,

I am in the process of making a kindle cover for my wife. She saw one that the likes online. The name of the color that they use is wine. If I want my dye job to have an end result like this, what kind and or color would you suggest? I don't remember seeing a dye caller "wine". I do think I have seen maroon.

Thanks for any suggestions

Rob

I am very new here, so I am certain many others will step in and correct me, but my Fiebing's "Mahogany" is very close to that color.

FWIW from the old grump; I say it was very close to Fiebing's 'Cordovan' dye. Mahogany mat be too red. Mike

Thank you both very much. I'll see if I can get to TLF friday and see if they happen to have any examples of those colors.

Be sure to do a test piece using the same leather as your project if possible. The samples are probable faded.

you could also try Fiebings Chocolate. it's a dark chocolate, but diluting with denatured alcohol helps with that.

Sorry for a slight offtopic, but has anyone managed to get a decent colour from fiebing's mahogany? It just comes out either very dark purple, or very weird red... Is there a special way to dye an item mahogany so it would look nice? =)
