First post, questions, intro and all that jazz

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone,i am posting this here since i will spend most of my time in this section.I have never worked with leather so the next few months will be interesting. My first intro into making my own holster was on a gun forum were someone posted there own creation.I had never even thought such a thing was possible.Since i need a new holster and have several guns without holsters i thought i would give this a try.I am thinking about buying some scraps to practice on,eleather has a 3lb bag of veg tan for 15 bucks, seems like a good investment.I also have al stohlman books(hand sewing and holster making)on the way.

Some newb questions you can answer

What are the basic tools i will need,i have read so much lately i think i overloaded my brain and i do not remember half the places i read it.I would like to use this thread as reference, hopefully some of you will not be tired of answering the same questions repeatedly.

When i am ready to start would the double shoulder be appropriate for holsters, seems to be cheaper then other cuts(due to size)but i am not sure of how many holsters could be made from one piece.

If i want to make a belt for carry, what is the appropriate cut and weight of leather for that.can one piece be used or do i need to glue together 2 pieces for the correct thickness.

Any other advice would also be appreciated as well,i know there will be a learning curve but i look forward to it.

On the slim chance some one here is from georgia, are there any places between atlanta and athens were i could get supplies as apposed to the internet.

Thanks,richard.

welcome aboard! you'll get plenty of good info from all the nice peeps on this site. there's a tandy right outside the 285 loop on lawrenceville highway for the atlanta area, so it's actually not too terribly far from ya.
