Type Of Leather Used To Make Galco Style Shoulder Holster

Recommended Posts

I am trying to find a good leather to make a shoulder holster type setup. I am looking for something that would look good with a suit and is comfortable to wear. I am hoping that the leather will form the the person wearing it after a while. I figure it has to be something that wont stain clothing also.

I'd just use a good veg tanned leather about 5-6 oz Tandy Leather has a nice Craftsman Oak double shoulder on sale til 1/31 that would work nicely ... and they'd have the straps you need also .... of course they sell a shoulder holster kit that would have everything you need and pre-cut

The Tandy shoulder hoster kit is useless for any kind of real world carry, in my opinion. Shoulder holsters are difficult enough to draw and holster up under optimum conditions, let alone duress. YMMV, but I found their rig uncomfortable and ill-fitting. I'm also 6'2 and 260lbs...so that may have something to do with my experience :)

Leather is the best stuff I have ever utilized. It will make a good holster and it is very comfortable to wear also.

use 8-9 oz veg tanned leather for a shoulder rig

thinner straps will conform to the curvature of the body better than wide straps

if you want a wide strap you will have to contour the strap for it to fit around the curve of the shoulder and back correctly otherwise you will get bulges and pooches in the strap.

narrow width straps just wear better than wide straps.
