Howdy From New Member In Montana

Recommended Posts

Howdy All,

I'm excited to have found your group, which appears to be the best resource to contact all you skilled and talented leather work folks. As a newbie, it is great to find and become a part of a sight like this.

Having been into self-reliance preparedness for over 3 decades, we founded/sponsored a local community prep group, www.bsoscblog.com. Our blog/forum has bunches of "how to" on DIY skills, but zero on leather work in particular. I will certainly promote your site on our blog for any who may be interested in gaining leather work skills. We are just starting to learn leather work, looking forward to gleaning from the knowledge of you guys and gals. We strive to learn to do as many skills as possible of our pioneer ancestors to help folks not only be prepared, but able to live economically and sustainably in this tough economy. We are in the beautiful Bitterroot Valley of Montana.

We just bought a leathercraft cottage industry from a retiring lady. She had a Pfaff 545 machine and gobs of supplies. Being in Montana, as for making salable products, we will probably be focusing on making gear like horse tack, hunting, chaps, boots, pack saddles, mukluks and who knows what all types of items. We also just set up to process raw wool to finished products, so look forward to making wool/felt lined leather products. Though we hope to generate some bit of commercial viability, our main goal is having the skills to make such products for the benefit of any area folks in the prep group in the event we all have to depend upon our own local community productivity for most all things.

Preparedness in skills and resources is so important, it prompted us to start our family operated store for self-reliance preparedness products, www.sosgeneralstore.com. We support and encourage personal and B2B barter in our store. No doubt, we will be needing much in the way of leather craft supplies, so we are open to trading, bartering, etc. from our family prep store for what products you have that would be of benefit to us. Since we are just jumping into leather craft work, I reckon virtually all of you have superior knowledge in these areas. This is a quantum leap from the old Tandy leather belt and billfold kits we did as kids back in the 60's!

We sure appreciate the opportunity to join your group. We are excited to learn from you old timers. Thanks a bunch.

Happy Preparedness Trails,

Jim
