small top thread and a larger bobbin thread?

Recommended Posts

The posts about sewing machine thread size usually reply with a small top thread and a larger bobbin thread? I'm sure this is in the "First Book of Leather Sewing," but why? How about a sheath where you can see both sides of the finished product?

Thanks!

Mike,

Some people recommend a larger size top thread, smaller bobbin thread.

That thread combination is supposed to be easier on the timing of your machine. I have a Artisan Toro 3000 stitcher. When stitching knife sheaths, I use a size 277 thread on both my top and bobbin threads. I prefer "the look" of same size threads.

With a smaller bottom threat you can sew longer before rewinding bobbin.

Most big stitchers say in the manual that you can get a tighter stitch with a smaller bobbin thread.
