How Do I Do This Type Of Punch?

Recommended Posts

Hello all,

I enjoy spending time on this forum, and I did learn a lot in the past couple of months since I joined, but sometimes I come across some things I am having a hard time finding an answer for.

I want to make a wallet, my first wallet, and I really like how the slots on this wallet seems to be punched, but I am wondering what is that tool called. I know there is a pippin hole punch, or button hole punch, but this seems to be way longer.

Any help will be appreciated.!

Thanks!

denisa,

Those are not punched with a specific style punch, they are made by punching a round hole at each end of the slit, then using a sharp knife and straight edge cut between the two round holes.

Thank you Beaverslayer! I was twisting and turning about that one, wondering if there is a special tool for it!

Thank you again

I saw a quite famous South Korean leatherworker (his name escapes me right now) who had a bunch of different leather tools made. Among others he had some punches made that you could punch out these slots with in different forms. It was basically a chisel with two hole punches in each end. Very useful tool if you're doing a bunch of these.

But if you're only doing one or two, the aforementioned method would work just fine.
