How do I make this?

Hi,

I am new here and new to leatherwork. I recently bought an antique saddle that is missing one of its fenders and I would like to make a replacement. The rest of the piece is easy to make as I am fairly handy but I dont know where to begin on recreating this design. Was it stamped in? Any help would be much appreciated.

This is what's called in the saddle trade, a "San Carlos" border. It can be made with several types of "meander" tools, found at places like Tandy, or other suppliers, or toolmakers. Not sure if that exact tool is being made, but you could have one made if you have the need to duplicate exactly.

Do a search right here on this board for "San Carlos", "meander", or "border tools", and there will be many mentions, and tips as to how to do this.

It's definitely a stamp. I used a similar type of stamp on a guitar strap I did.

I don't know where to get that exact stamp though.

I think it's called some sort of wandering stamp or something of that nature.

You just stamp it in one direction, flip it verticaly then stamp again. It's fairly

quik and painless too

While I am no expert, it looks to me like it was done with a meander border roller. Which is a thick bronze or some type of other metal tube with the design carved or machined into it. Tandy and others like Tippman, Zack White etc. sell the rolls and and machines which are hand or motor operated. You could do it with stamps also, either way you would probably have to have it made, to match the design exactly.

Phil, get this tool from Tandy or someone else and then with a Dremel tool add a hollow area to the top part.

Hidecrafter's has that stamp, Tandy has one similar, the hidecrafter stamp is a Craft Japan E683. Barry King makes one as well, but it's probably too expensive for just this one fender remake.

Bruce Cheaney shows several examples of how to make them with a serpentine stamp. Here's a god start.
