dpdelcollo Report post Posted June 2, 2013 I am doing a project where I need to make several pieces of leather scale armor. Each chest piece needs ~500 leather scales and I have several different designs planned. I have been told that a clicker die is the way to go. Originally I was told that a custom clicker die for this purpose would likely cost $50-$75. So I rushed out and bought a 12ton shop press, and got some drawings of sample scales. But when it came time to find quotes for the dies, I am getting quotes in the $150-$250 range! Am I shopping at the wrong places? I am moderately handy and have a pretty good wood and metal shop. Am I better off making my own dies? I tried reading about homemade dies and the consensus at CNCzone.com was that it is better to buy a professionally made die rather than make something. Another person suggested that these scales are common enough there probably is someone who already makes dies specifically for these scales. Ds Leather Report post Posted June 4, 2013 When I ordered my lamellar die from Texas Custom it was just over $100. The cost really depends on the complexity/size of the design and number of holes. You might be able to save a couple dollars by getting the outline made and punching/drill the holes yourself. What is the design you are going for? The classic tombstone 2"x3" one as well as the Wisby "D" style and 1"x4" Chinese birka style. I would also like to think about a leaf style design, like a three lobed maple leaf or something. It seems that the holes cost about as much or more than the outer shape. But imagining punching or drilling 7 holes per scale x 500 scales, I think the die that includes the hole punches is a much better option. If I had plans on making scales or completed armor for sale, the cost of the die would be much less of an issue, but since it is just for myself, I'm trying to keep it cheap. Of course I could go and buy someone else's pre punched scales, but the cost of 500 scales is much more than the most expensive die I've had quoted.
