I'm not sure how to use them in place of a buckle I posted this in a different area and really didn't get much help at all, so hoping someone here can help... I am new here and am just getting started in leatherworking. I would like to make a dog collar for a friend's dog. I bought some nice hardware...a stainless steel D-ring, small belt buckle type buckle, clip, and Conway buckle...all in 1" width. I have some 9-10oz shoulder and would like to use it to make the collar. I've been reading a lot on here since I joined to try to understand the various skills / processes needed to do things. The posts I've read have been very helpful so far. Can anyone help me come up with a way to make a nice dog collar using the Conway buckle? I've seen some online that use it, the d-ring, and a metal buckle, but they have the unfinished side on the inside...I thought it would be nice to make it dual layer and hand stitch it together so that it is finished on the inside and outside. I know the dog won't care but I think it would make for a nicer collar. Someone else assumed I wanted to use both buckles and the d-ring...I don't...I have extra hardware so can use a regular buckle if I change my mind. I'd rather use the conway buckle though. dirtclod Report post Posted January 15, 2012 I don't know why you would want to use a conway buckle instead of a regular buckle. A regular buckle is going to be more secure and easier to adjust. IMO conaways are used someplace theirs not much stress and that the buckle doesn't need to be adjusted very much if ever. Plus unless you get a solid brass one they will rust out or corode in no time. Use a real buckle for a dog collar ! Quote Share this post Link to post Share on other sites
HellcatLeathers Report post Posted February 29, 2012 I would use a regular buckle or a rolling bar buckle. Would not recommend using a Conway buckle. I have made several dog collars. Also, if you're a newbie, I would't recommend spending your time handstitching a double layer of leather. Single layer of veg-tanned leather medium thickness (9 or 10 oz is a little heavy in my opinion) would be fine. Don't worry about finishing the inside of the collar...the oil and dirt from the dog's skin/fur will affect it anyway. Good luck! Post your creation to the Show Off thread when you're done! Put the DEE ring at the end of the collar and the the buckle..this way you might eliminate the need of a belt keeper.If you make it , just post the picture here and let us know if it works...
