Edge Sanding

Recommended Posts

From my research I have found that many people are using a stationary belt sander on their edges. I do not have one of these, but I do have a bench grinder. Will this work with a fine grit wheel or is the speed of the wheel going to be a problem??

Only an opinion but I think it will be going to fast and tend to scorch leather, and the leather will tend to just fill up the wheel and not do anything, if you have one try the small (I use 1") drum sander that can be chucked into a drill press, run on slow speed with a course paper I think around an 80 grit. that seems to work pretty well for me.

Thanks Dink. I do have a drill press. That will probably be the best route for me. I might add a belt sander later. It always seems like I could use one on projects.

Dan....I use emery sanding sticks for small jobs. They come in coarse, medium and fine grit sticks.

I use a sander like the one below, they are available for less than $125.00 regularly and you can find them on sale. Might could find one at Harbor Freight, etc. It gives me the option to use the belt sander or a disk sander, I use both, the belt layed flat for cleaning dye mishaps off the back of belts and the disk for evening up edges on holsters, knife sheaths, etc.

the grinding wheel will, in fact scorch leather if you're not careful (ask me how i know). but it won't clog up as you might think. i've been able to do a real nice job with mine. it works way better as you go up in leather thickness.

gotta get me a belt sander.

The trick to keep the belt or the wheel from burning is to use VERY sharp sandpaper. Brand new, do not use on anything else. Also about 80 grit is good, finer tends to burn.

A small sanding drum mounted on a Dremmel works very well!
