Leather Seam For Lederhosen

Recommended Posts

I am a total rookie when it comes to working with leather. Despite this fact I am going to make a pair of lederhosen out of leather. The reason I am posting here is because I have searched the internet and several books for several weeks to figure out how to recreate the thick seams in the following link. Based on searching through this site and the crazy amount of information on here I am guessing this is probably common knowledge around for the members on this site! So I appologize upfront if this is a stupid question. The best I can tell is it is several pieces of leather glued together then sewn and then cut but I am just not sure.

The closeset I came to a video that shows how to do this is here.

Anways I thoght I would give this a shot. Thanks in advance for anyone who reads this or has a comment!

Yep, thick seams. Looking at the picture, I'd say it is all machine sewn. It also appears to be VERY complicated construction (I collect and fix old sewing machines and have made some of my own britches and tunics - out of fabric, not leather). This project is VERY ambitious. Good luck to you on your endeavor. I'm not sure what sewing machine they are using to make 'der lederhosen', but I'm sure it's commercial/industrial (and not "industrial strength" domestic like you sometimes see on eBay). Does the website tell what thickness of leather (looks like chrome tanned suede) they are using? 2 oz is common for garments and is not particularly thick for sewing on an old straight stitch metal geared domestic sewing machine as long as it's not too many layers. I have tried sewing chaps leather (4 oz) on sewing machines and it isn't easy on the ones I've got. There's a reason they work so well for making chaps - tough stuff.

Yeah I did fear that was the case. I will probably just have to simplify my design. I hope it works out. I guess you would expect 2500 euro shorts to be well made though!
