Reinforcing Or Strengthen Spongey Leather?

Recommended Posts

I hid a snag on a one piece strap I am making. The very end of the strap, which will be stitched into a loop is a lot spongier than I had initially thought. Must be from the neck as the strap was cut along the back.

I can't reinforce the area with another piece of leather as the thickness of the leather at the loop is critical. I could possibly glue some fabric as a reinforcement and to prevent stretching or possibly use some liquid to strengthen the leather..but not sure what.

Worst case I'll use cordura but I wonder if anyone has any ideas?

Thanks!

Bob

Not sure on the function you need the strap for but if it were me and I couldn't just do another strap and use that one somewhere else, I'd cut a new loop and attach it to the strap in a way that looked decorative enough to look like I meant it :P Of course, it depends on the forces you're going to put on the strap.

Put a piece of fibreglass mesh like used for drywall joints between the layers, or nylon web or such. There is a thread here about reinforcing dog collars that you could search for here. Has some good comments and remedies for straps that stretch.

I ended up skyving down the spongy part and gluing in a piece of 3oz veg tan and then stitching. On the back side, as an experiment, I glued and stitched in a piece of nylon ripstop, which made for a thinner loop. I did some tests on a similar piece and the nylon looks like a good solution. I used a hot knife to trim it so it won't fray. Barge seems to hold the nylon to the flesh side well.
