Grooving Leather For Stitching. Cased Or Dry? Before Or After Tooling?

Recommended Posts

Newbie needs help.

I just got all the hand stitching tools including Al Stolman's book, but these questions aren't answered.

It seems to go easier, and looks better, when cased.

......and the grooving can help establish boundaries for the tooling.

Just my opinion.

I think it depends on the project, if you are antiquing then it will collect that stuff which will transfer to your tools when your stitching.

Well,

I've done three wallets since posting, and the third one was best. It had nearly returned to dry before I'd grooved it but I don't know still which is best:head_hurts_kr: . The third was the first I got a nice deep consistant groove in so I was proud of that.

I'm really just now getting some traction on correctly holding/using the tools. My overstitch wheel had an eighth of an inch play in it from the factory (2 different ones) until I broke out the pliers (thanks to LW.net)

My opinion so far is cased, but as always I'm liable to change my mind.

Thanks for asking KAYAK!

God Bless, Ray
