Ladies clutch hummingbird and roses

Recommended Posts

This is a clutch that was a special order for Christmas. I drew the hummingbird and roses and tooled them onto this small clutch. I really enjoyed doing this one.

Beautiful! I have always adored hummingbirds! I really like your colors, too. Not too vivid, not too dull. What did you use to dye it, and how did you apply?

Hi Hilly, Thanks! First I wetted the leather after I was done carving and applied the Tandy tan gel antique dye and wiped it off so that I had some dark in the carved and tooled areas. I let it dry fairly dry and then used a damp paper towel to rub off a lot of the tan dye on the areas the popped out. Then I used Tandy hi lite emerald green on the humming bird and leaves applying it like watercolor, not covering the whole leaf. Then I used Tandy hi lite yellow on the leaves as well. I applied quite a bit of that to get it to show up. Then I applied scarlet Tandy Hi lite dye to the flowers and roses and then yellow around the edges of the flowers and roses. I did the same process to the hummingbird. After the hi lite dyes I let them dry and applied watered down Tandy cova color Metallic gold on the wings and chest of the hummingbird and a bit on the roses to give a metallic golden sheen. I let all that dry and then coated with Tandy super sheen. I use a lot of watercolor and acrylic painting techniques in doing my leatherwork. I like the way it comes out. Hope that helps!
