  1. Can anyone please tell me how to use a welt cutter?. Does this tool actually cut out the piece of leather from the insole that the feather is sewn into? Wish I could do a drawing on here. A picture paints a 1000 words, and all that.
  2. I would like to dye some leather white in order to make a pair of duotone shone. Any recommendations?
  3. Hi everyone, I am about to start making myself a pair of shoes. The Youtube contributer says to use 1 oz thread to sew the uppers. I have some 1mm and "60" metric also some 18/4 linen thread. Do any of the coincide with 1oz. Does anyone have a conversion table that I could use. Thanks in advance.

  5. Can someone please tell me what diameter 1oz thread is? Also how does "60", "30" and "20" fit into the scheme of things. I am about to embark on making a pair of shoes and apparently need 1oz nylon thread. .I already have 1mm nylon thread that I use for all my leather work, but thought that this may be a bit large for hand sewing the shoes. Thank you. Ian.
  6. Well you certainley have enough machines. I intend doing it all by hand. If I'm not careful the machine runs away with me. Have already made 5 pair of moccasins.
  7. I am going to make myself some shoes. Has anyone on here done it. If how difficult was it. I have watched Andrew Wrigley's videos on You tube and it looks do able. Anyone got any tips or comments. Ian.
  8. Thank you very much for that information. Do you know if Charles Birch stick with their wholesale only policy or are they a bit flexible? Ian.
  9. I am seriously considering making myself a couple of pairs of shoes. I need a supplier of the above, wooden pegs and cobblers nails, in the UK. Does anyone know where I can get hold of these items Ian.
  10. How should creasers be heated up? Le Prevo say that they should be heated by a meths burner. Any ideas or suggestions.
  11. I am surprised that no one else uses old 4oz Fiebings bottles. I also use a 60ml syringe and needle to measure the dyes out. Ian.
  12. Thank you for that Jax. I was begining to doubt that I should heat them. Le Prevo haven't got back to me yet. Does anyone else heat theirs up??
  13. I have just been using an Ivan Creaser that I bought from Le Prevo in the UK. I was using it with heat, from gas hob. The ends were made of solder and melted. Are they all made the same way? If so how do you heat them up?
  14. Hi all, I have a piece of marble, that I had given, that I use to stamp on. However this is about 20x16x1/2". This is now starting to break up at the edges. Obviously to thin. My question is what is the minimum thickness I could use. Also could I use a piece of sanded up sandstone, or Yorkshire stone as we call it over here. I am thinking of the stone they use for fireplace hearths. Why do we all use marble or granite. If it has to be marble or granite I was wondering about the offcut they produce when fitting worktops in kitchens, when they cut out for the sink or the cooking hob., This I believe is about 1 1/4" thick.
  15. I am in the process of making a phone case for an iPhone5. I had ordered a magnetic catch for the closure, to avoid pressing on the screen with a standard press stud( or snap as you call it over there). Thing is, I have just thought will the magnetism in the magnetic catch cause any problems with the phone. I feel as if I am between a rock and a hard place.
