Art of the Cowboy Makers - 2010 contest

"Bring Your Best" Maker's Contest

We are now taking applications for this contest. I gave last years entrants a week or so head start for getting in and have already received some entries.

We added two new categories, Braiding and Engraving, so don't let me down all you braiders!!

This show was a huge sucess this past May. A good place for a lot of exposure of your talent. The judging is done by the entrants themselves. So if the category fills up there will be 25 judges for the champion in each category.

Everyone who comes to the show gets to vote for people's choice, so they have to really look and pick their best in each category. So instead of walking by and saying "That's nice", they really study the items. Great exposure for all makers, and that's the whole idea.

Some items were bought right out of the contest, and some orders were taken on items that were already sold.

The applications can be downloaded from our website: www.artofthecowboymakers.com

Any questions or comments, PLEASE ASK!

I have been asked a couple questions about this contest. I thought I would post them here in case someone else wanted to know.

What can I enter in the Engraving category?

Anything EXCEPT bits and spurs since we already have categories for those. This category is to show your engraving ability so it is up to you.

How does the judging work?

We are going to judge the same way as last year because it worked so well and all the contestants were happy with the way it was done. Basically, you will judge each category you enter. So potentially if the category fills up there will be 25 judges.

How this works is you must pick the first 4 places and these are given points.

1st - 4 points

2nd -3 points

3rd - 2 points

4th - 1 point

Each contestant fills out his (or her) judges card and then all the cards are tallied up to determine the winner.

Each category is done this way for the "Champion" in each.

The "Peoples Chioce" is voted on by everyone who attends the show, all the dealers and all the contestants of all categories. This voting is seperate from the makers judging. They will get one vote per category for Peoples Choice.

It does not matter when you made the item or if it has been in some other contest or show.

You will just not be permitted to bring the same item again in years to come.

It can be for sale, but does not have to be.

We are working on an idea so everyone will know it is for sell and how much if you wish to sell it.

You may place business cards next to your entry. One of the main purposes of this contest is to promote the contemporary makers.

If you have any other questions, Please ask!

You can post questions here and I check it at least twice a day.

You will probably have to use Internet Explorer to get it to work. The link is at the bottom of the rules page. I know we have been in contact Tracy.

We had makers from 12 states last year and already have makers from 9 states so far this year. There are a couple categories that look like they will fill up pretty quickly, so don't wait 'till the last minute to enter.

We have filled all of our category sponsors but have room for other sponsors who would like to get involved and get some exposure.

To All Makers:

As you know one of our main objectives of Art of the Cowboy Makers contest is to promote and get exposure for the contemporary makers. We are now taking it one step farther - going to the next level!

We have just confirmed a new project we have been working on for a while now.

The top 10 makers from the makers judging in each category will be invited to have their entry go straight from the contest to the ProRodeo Hall of Fame in Colorado Springs, Colorado. It will be on display there with your biography and description. The length of time is still to be determined but we are looking at around two months, give or take. When we have a definite time frame we will let you know.

This is a great opportunity for any maker invited. The ProRodeo Hall of Fame is a very prestigeous museum with thousands of visitors from all over the world. We are very happy to have the ProRodeo Hall of Fame support our makers by offering to display our top makers with a special showing.

To all, After the above post on two websites and sending emails to over 130 makers about the ProRodeo Hall of Fame invite I have been swamped with calls and emails. There is a lot of interest in the added exposure of the ProRodeo Hall of Fame. Some from last years contest and some new makers. This is being sent to 124 makers and will be posted on two websites. My point is this contest is limited to the first 25 in each category, First come - First Serve. With all of the sudden interest don't wait or you might not get in. Just want everyone to have fair warning. Our website will answer most questions: www.artofthecowboymakers.com There is a button at the bottom of the rules page to download the application. Any questions just email or call: 602-482-9758

To all bit, boot, braiders, engravers, saddle and spur makers: This is just a reminder that the entry deadline for this contest is April 30th. We need to have all entries in by then so we can have everything done for the contest. The top 10 from each category will go straight from the contest to the Pro Rodeo Hall of Fame for a two month display. We still have room in all categories but spurs are filling up quickly. There doesn't seem to be much interest in Bits though. Any bit makers? What we need from entrants: 1. Description: A short (paragraph) description of your entry including price if it is for sale. The sale will be between you and the buyer. If it has already been sold or is part of someones collection, we will put that where the price would be. 2. Biography: We will also need a biography of the maker or makers. This will be used for all entries that will be at the Pro Rodeo Hall of Fame display. This will give the public at the museum more information about you. 3. Business cards: Don't forget to bring business cards to put out next to your entry. If you are mailing your entry to me just include them with your entry. All extras will be returned. Most questions can be answered on our website: www.artofthecowboymakers.com There is a link at the bottom of the rules page to print out an entry application.Any other questions just email or call: 602-482-9758

Would anyone be interested in a "carving contest" ?

We're thinking of possibly a legal size (11"x14") binder one year and something different every year to keep it interesting.

Comments? Suggestions? Ideas?

I carving contest would be great in my opinion. And changing up the project every year would keep it fresh and new stuff coming along. Keep us posted. RW

For the engravers.

The question was asked: What can be entered into the engraving category?

You can enter anything except bits & spurs since we already have categories for those.

So it is up to you what you want to put in.

If your a gun engraver you could even just put in a floor plate or frame parts and not the whole gun. Just something that will show case your engraving.

Any comments and questions welcome!

A couple people have asked if they need to be present to enter.

No, you don't have to be there to enter or win.

Your entry can be brought by a friend of yours or can be mailed to me to take for you.

Any questions just ask!

One week left to entry deadline of April 30th.

Just a quick point.

Some makers have said they would not enter because they could not win.

My answer is win, lose or draw you are going to come out ahead.

Consider this:

For a $100.00 entry fee you get exposure to 4 or 5 hundred people at the contest and then several thousand more at the Pro Rodeo Hall of Fame during the two month exibit.

You will have your website, contact information and pictures of your work on our website.

You also get the chance to win cash and prizes.

I have entered the engraving contest knowing I won't win because my engraving is not good enough to win.

I'm not trying to be modest, it's just a fact.

I entered for the cheap exposure of my work. Where else can you get this much exposure for $100.00?

Something to think about!

I have seen a lot of great work on this site. You might be suprised with the enterest you get by having others to see your work too.

Any questions just ask!

Comments and suggestions welcome!

Thanks, Casey

To all makers that wait 'till the last minute to enter:

This is very Important!!

If your application is in the mail by Friday, April 30th we will accept your entry. Please let me know it is on the way.

But we will need you to email your biography and description by Friday, April 30th.

We are having posters made for the Pro Rodeo Hall of Fame with the makers bio's on them.

Any descriptions and bio's received after April 30th will not be included on the posters. SORRY!

This has to go to the printer by May 3rd. We will need a couple days to do the layout and design.

As always please ask any questions here or call me: 602-482-9758

Thanks, Casey
