buckle I did in the class I taught the kids

Recommended Posts

Here is the buckle I did in the class I taught the kids this week. I laced it today at home as I was busy showing them stitching there. It was very quick and basic, but I was disappointed to see how spotty the leather was after staining - just something that happens sometimes...anyhow, my question is: should I color the knot and if so, what?

Well, it IS leather, if it was sheet metal you could have spray painted it and done a smooth and even finish, then it wouldn't look like leather. I love Peter Main's work but the color is way too even. Your background is excellent, you can see it is leather. And don't color the design, just my opinion. I am, as you may have noticed, a big proponent of character, it's what makes leather...well...leather.

Holly, Still into Celtic knots. You do them great. As far as coloring the knot, IMHO I would do so. Primarily because the entire buclke is dark and the knot will not stand out. I would color it the color of your lacing if possible. Carl

I agree with Carl -- mostly. You don't need the exact color of the lace, but approach it. I would also prefer to see it shaded rather than a solid color. Don't add any more dark color, just use the light color to create a 3-D knot.
