I strongly suspect you know exactly what it is, George, and I bet you have used it too. This is a boot sole roller. Designed to put a 'dish' into well soaked leather boot soles before they were added to an upper - or used in a repair. Celticleather will doubtless have more to say about this lovely machine as I understand his dad used to keep a bucket full of boot soles soaking in a 'marinade' made from a secret recipe so they were all soft and ready for use. I bet he had a boot sole roller. LOL! Ray You're right, Ray! Dad had one at the shop, and used it exactly as you described. It also served to wring out the excess mulling liquid before attaching the sole to the boot, and at the same time 'plated' the sole, rather like that huge monster we saw at Baker's tannery. It's ages since I saw one, but I recognise the WHB plate . . . we still use WHB equipment in the shop today! Just imagine what that hefty brass roller would cost today! It originally came from the old shoemaking workshop I once worked in, that's when there was ten of us. Now there is only me, go figure. Well done guys. I forgot how heavy the dam thing is.
