Making a Saddle for a Dog

Recommended Posts

I am just toying with this idea, but I have a hundred forty pound Leonberger and a little Swedish Vallhund, she is a 21 pound cattle dog from Sweden, and they do some few tricks.

Soooo... I am wondering if I could rig up a saddle for him that would actually stay level on his back. I know that dogs have loose skin and that's the problem, but has anyone actually made a saddle for a dog? The dog alone is my new Leo Mars, and he's considerbaly larger than Cosmo was. Of course Astra is seven, and probably a pound heavier than in that picture.

Thanks in advance

Many saddles have been made for dogs. Probably most of them were made for monkeys. The most famous one I remember is a rodeo clown Wilber Plauger who had a monkey who rode a sheep dog tnd preformed at rodeos.

Still today Tommy Lucia and his monkey "Whiplash" perform at rodeos. whiplashrides.com

You can google "monkey rides dog" and see some pretty neat videos.

What a cute couple! Pat, another thing you might consider is letting him pull the smaller dog in a little cart, in which case you could make a harness and some reigns. A 140 lb dog, on average, could pull over 400 lbs on level terrain (assuming he's healthy, and takes to it), which means he could quite easily pull a people cart.

You can see lots of great videos of dog carting activity from this site: http://dogdrivingflix.magnify.net/watch/

This is my favorite: http://dogdrivingflix.magnify.net/video/Ji...Tom-driving-duo

There is a terrific writer and dog man named Donald McCaig who wrote a book about a Border Collie that gets "lost" and ends up being ridden by a monkey. Now I know where he got it from.
