It really depends on what I am doing. I prefer a mallet when tooling. Right now my favorite is an 11oz nylon mallet (cheapo) If I need more force for punching I use my Barry King 16oz maul. If I am doing fine work with a rather pointed tool like a seeder, I use a 2oz tiny mallet that was given to me by a vendor as a gift... so I don't drive the seeder through the leather.

I've tried almost all of them. Wooden, plastic mallet, rawhide mallet, Al Stohlman brand rawhide maul, ASB polyhead maul, Barry King straight maul, Barry King tapered maul. My latest maul ( i prefer mauls over mallets), is one from Ed "the bearman" LaBarre. I gotta say that this is the maul for me. It's very well balanced, never slips, and never flakes, and it's flipping pretty to boot! I love it.

A maul, mallet, whatever is a very personal thing. You'll have to experiment to see what's for you.

I'm with Marlon,

Me too :-) I prefer the mauls and both my tooling mauls is from Ed "the Bearman". He makes wonderfully functional tools but also they're beautiful and a joy to work with each and every time, Love'm :-)

I also have a huge wooden maul that weighs +1.2 kg (44 ounce) to my makers mark or some heavy basket weave tooling, and then my Stohlman mallet that's mainly used by my daughter.

Here's another thumbs up for Bearman Mauls. I have 4 mauls, 3 of which are Bearman Mauls. The other is a 16oz. Stohlman, the first maul I bought and will be replaced as soon as I have the funds to do so. As for sizes, the 9oz BM maul is for detail work, the 16oz AS is for general tooling, the 21oz BM is for backgrounding and basketweaves and lastly the 28oz BM is for hole & slot punching as well as heavy stamping like large geometrics. On a side note, I also have a 1 ton arbor press for my maker's mark and Made in the USA stamp.

The difference in action between the Bearman mauls and the Stohlman are night and day. While the Stohlman is decent and the most used due to it's weight, the Bearman mauls feel better in the hand and give a more positive hit with less vibration. The extra inch of head material (length) is also nice as well.

Cheers,

Chris

Here's a pic of the custom 28oz Amboyna Burl handled maul Beary made for me last year. I'll see about getting pics of the two Lacy Oak handled ones Ed turned for me earlier this year.

I have a maul from Bearman, a couple from Barry King, and four from Wayne Jueschke. They each have their merits. If you ever get down this way, you are sure welcome to come by and try them all. Reading your interests below your avatar, we can kick around some western history and Charlie Russell too.
