Some questions for western holster/belt makers

Recommended Posts

1. what thickness of hand sewing thread looks the best w/3" wide belt.

2. are rivets used in conjunction w/thread on billet, chape, keeper and bullet loops for looks, strength or both.

3. can a filler of some type be used on the inside to tilt the handgrip out away from the wearers side.

4. what is your opinion of the use of end plugs, spots, conchos etc?

5. anyone use coffee as a stain, should oil be added and what is used to get a low gloss waterproof finish.

Thanks for any info. I am now at the point of punching all the holes on the Vaquero .45 combo I posted awhile back. PIA hole punching tubes! giving me a lot of trouble. Since it is hopefully going to be a display piece at a local gun shop I am taking my time and making it as nice as I can, would be a shame to screw it up this far along.

I used 277 on the last one I did, . . . there are some pictures of it on the other thread we were talking on.

I have started using 346 on some things I'm doing now, . . . and I really like the way it looks and works, . . . I just may be switching.

I've seen where a number of folks use 277 on top and 207 in the bobbin, . . . but that is just too technical for me, . . . gotta keep it simple, . . . one number.

May God bless,

Dwight

Jordan,

Can't help threadwise, as you guys number your thread differently over there. I use an 18/4 thread for almost everything.

I use both rivets and Chicago screws in conjunction with thread to secure billets, loops and straps. I use them for both looks and strength.

It's possible to make a thick enough holster shank to hold a wet formed curve, so you could shape the shank of the holster wet and have it hold the shape after it dries out. Some 'Quickdraw' rigs of the Fifties had specially formed sheet metal pieces in the holster shank and holster to hold the gun absolutely steady. A fiberglass or vacuum formed plastic piece would do the same thing.

I think a resourceful chap should be able to devise a heavy leather backing piece which would do the job.

Spots and Conchos are a matter of personal taste, as is the use of end plugs. My personal opinion is that an open-toed holster is better, as dirt and moisture can escape.

Hope this helps.

Cheers,

Karl
