Sheridan Stamped Waste Paper Basket

Recommended Posts

I just bought the book Sheridan Style Carving with Bill Gardner and Clinton Fay. In the back of the book there are pictures of these Kick @ss waste paper baskets. Does any one have a pattern or a place I can go to get the pattern. I really don't need the tooling pattern I really need the construction pattens.

I have the same book, and I agree, the wastepaper basket is stunning.

I've also given some thought into making it, and here's how I'd do it:

I would get a cheap metal wastepaper bucket to wrap the leather around. My reasoning for this, is that sometimes garbage can get icky, and I'd rather it end up on the easy to clean metal than the leather. So, you just have to use the bucket to derive the pattern. You can probably use the cheap basket to derive the pattern and use as a form to wrap the leather around and remove it once it's assembled. For the bottom, Ann Stohlman's sewing book describes how to hand sew corners.

Just my thoughts. I haven't gotten around to trying this, yet.

I am thinking the bottom is made from regular 1 by dimensional lumber cut to the oval shape this would account for the upholstery tacks I see at the bottom. What do you think?

Leather and Wood vol 2 has a magazine rack that might give you some ideas. Is available as an ebook from Tandy.

CTG

Thanks for the idea

I have the same book. The construction of them seems pretty simple. What I'm after is the tooling patterns. I thought about blowing them up on a copy machine but the sides where it starts to curve in the picture would be distorted and I can't think of away to deal with that issue. Any ideas? Or does anyone have a good sheridan style tooling pattern that would work for a waste paper basket?
