tutorial & pattern place...

Recommended Posts

How about a special place here for the tutorials that's start showing up, if you can find them at all, they're all over the place:-)

We're working on something right now....a way for people to upload content w/o having to do it as forum posts. A cyber- encyclopedia...our own leather knowledge base. This is pretty neat, and pretty easy to use as well. We'll keep you posted!

Johanna, when you get it set up, I have both of Beaverslayers tutorials as DOCs and can convert them to PDF in need be... once you get the area set up, if it would make it easier for you, I can give them to you to upload to it as a single Document, instead of a compilation of several posts.

Wolfie, your tag line about "Hit Me" . . .

Ever hear the one "The masochist says 'Beat me" and the sadist says 'No.'"

An idle mind is the devil's playground: maybe if I did more leatherwork you guys wouldn't be hearing from me so much. <grin>

While running around the site I noticed an 11-15-08 entry by Pete, Member #520, suggesting a place where we could post and/or download pattersn to share. I didn't see any feedback on that. Sounds like not a half-bad ideas. Any thought ever given to that. Yes, I can see possible pattern infringement issues from commercial for-sale pattern packs, but home-drawn ones, maybe not. With the right guide lines it might work. Whaddya think?

No takers I guess Harvey! If you would like some belt, flower, album patterns I would be glad to copy them and send them to you. I drew them so make some great Christmas gifts and send me the fotos of the finished work. Love to see someone else's take on it!

Merry Christmas

I am artisically challenged, but I think this would be a great idea. I believe or assume and you know what that does. Anyways, many crafts people here make a living drawing up and making these wonderful products out of leather. Sharing them is like Apple giving out their IPOD secrets to anyone. I know, apples to oranges, but to any small business owner, they are like "apple" to themselves and family.

Anyways, giving up designs are like giving up secrets, some will not do it. I was in the company of a great belt maker this last Saturday just sitting in aw at his work. We were sitting at the very busy Tandy Leather Factory in Austin and he was working without letting anyone interrupt him. He answered questions as he went about his busy. He was will share any knowledge "verbally" to anyone guild member there until it came to his "tap-off" designs. The friendliness stopped there and he did not hestitate saying that he did not share his patterns.

He explained that he has his own re-worked designs that his "customers" are accustom to and I cannot blame him. His belts go for $150 each and this particular week he was working on 8 belts. WOW I was grateful to WD for sharing his work and remedies on floral carving. I certainly changed some of my ways and will share them with my upcoming "western floral carving" course this coming weekend.

I agreed with Ms. Tina to start posting some patterns and I plan on when I get around ot learning design more. For now, I will stick to patterns that I have found on the internet from the 40's-50's. I have a big collection and plan on continuing so if I can share something, let me know and I too will copy it for you.

Greetings from Round Rock, Tx

Is there somewhere on LW.net where patterns are actually posted?

Hi, Johanna.

Looks like there's been no response to my "is there any section here where there are actually share-able patterns?". As such, what do you and the other administrators think of such a category? IILG has such, and even Tandy's website has several freebies (Jim Linnell, Tony Laier). Surely there must be some members willing to share patterns w/those of us who are pattern-challenged (and/or lazy). Whatcha think about having a downloadable category? Is it do-able?

We're working on it, Harvey. Sorry I didn't see your other thread (been working on restoring the pre crash posts! :) )

Our plan is to have Wiki arrangement where members can contribute things to share, and members can download what they are interested in. It's a good idea- and I'm glad there is such an interest in it. If the members all support it, it will be awesome.

Sure there are -- be specific, and generally people will pipe up.

I asked this chick once "why do you go out with a sadist?"

She said "Dunno, beats me"

I dont think there is one central place, but there are lots attached to messages.

Is there a certain pattern you are looking for??

Nah, no special pattern. But like so many others, I'm always on the lookout for a new pattern to challenge or inspire me. As I browse through my collected magazine issues, or the Baird volumes, or other saved pieces, I still look for things. For example, in last month's LCSJ issue, I took out the floral pattern and in examining/studying it, separated part of the overall design to use a section on a notepad holder.

I was just thinking about a central collection category.

Johanna, sorry if it sounded like I was crabbing; that wasn't my intent. Apologies, and once again, thank you for ALL the work you do for the rest of us. It does NOT go unappreciated.

Harvey
