Leather Shine

Recommended Posts

Hi, I've been looking to make my own leather stuff for a while since I can't never find the right size of bag, wallet with the right amount of compartments, right finish etc. So I've ordered a bunch of stuff after months of research and I've made my first trifold card holder. Everything went fine (except the stamping, kept disappearing), it's not perfect but it'll do me for now since my old plastic bus wallet was falling apart.

My question is, how do you get the leather to be REALLY shiny? I've tried everything and done loads of testers from a range of finishes I bought. The leather I'm using is 1.5mm veg tan hide dyed with Fiebing's spirit dye, british tan colour.

It is shiny but I want it to be like this

Can anyone help?

Thanks! :)

do you mean shiny like patent leather?

there is a thread or two on here about how to do a proper spit shine. none of them are the best way to do it, but are passable and will get your stuff pretty shiny.

maybe one day i'll type out how i do it. it would take quite a while and a lot of pics or a video for me to explain it correctly.

also if you google "military spit shine" some of the links should explain it well.

Thanks, looking forward to see how you do it one day! :) I'll look up military spit shine and see if it helps...

It's just a nice pro gloss finish I'm after rather than the dull gloss/shiny matte finish...

A few thin coats of Resolene may provide the finish you are looking for.
