Maple Leaf Tooling Pattern

Recommended Posts

Does anyone know of a good maple leaf pattern... something similar to the Al Stohlman holster book where he has the flapped holster with oak leaves?

Thanks,

Jake

Hey Jake, I just bought a maple leaf stamp. But when I'm looking for patterns, what I use is a search for, well in this case, maple leaf coloring pages. They're free to print out, and in b/w so easy to trace.

Thanks for help, folks. I've been looking through a stack of my woodworking magazines...I know I had a pattern for a cutting board or something from Wood magazine, from back in the 80's, but I'll be darned if I can find that issue. I have hundred of issues of woodworking magazines and perhaps a hundred differnent books too.( My former occupation), so they all kind of run together in my memory.

Kayak, you're right...I'm just going to have to sit down and create my own pattern. I suppose I can copy the basic layout of the existing holster and replace the oak leaves and acorns with keys and maple leaves.

DoubleC, how big is the stamp?

mcn: thanks for the pattern.

I wonder how well Bobby's new book will translate over from floral to leaf? Drawing the leaves isn't the issue..I'm more handicapped on the layout/ flow part of it.

The one I got because I didn't have to buy a 35.00 set is around 1/2 x 1/2" Bigger than I wanted but an individual stamp. Saw them from 1/4th (the 35.00 set) to an inch on eBay Jake. It was I think 7.99 and free shipping? Go to LW tools and treatments there and you'll see all kinds of maple leaf stamps. Well I mean run a search for them after you get to T & T :-) Good Luck, Cheryl

Oh....on a holster? I think I'd run a scan of a real leaf then then use that for a carving pattern. Actually I've never scanned foliage before, what good idea. LOL

Jake, Bobby's book is about planning out and executing your pattern so it flows and is uniform with uniform spacing. It should really translate well, afterall, leaves are leaves.

Thanks, Bob. I saved a copy of the order form but our printer is acting wacky.

Been there done that! Just got my computer back and running after quite a while. In the mean time I just called Bobby direct and sent him a check. His phone number is on his web sight.

Just to update my own thread, I found some nice maple leaf patterns ( and pines and oaks too) in a book I received today.

I have been scanning objects for years. Using a photo manipulating program (Photoshop if you have big bucks, ACDSee for small budget, Gimp for no budget, you can easily outline the leaf, plus you get to choose the individual leaf or cluster of leafs you want to use, then you can resize them to match the holster, purse, project. Print the leaf on regular paper, lay a piece of plastic wrap on the damp leather, put the design on top of the plastic wrap and use a ball point pen to trace the design onto the leather. You can use the printed image to place vein detail in the leaves. Do the scanning in greyscale. I have scanned the cut leather, then placed the scanned leaves on the holster to see what the final design will look like. This helps with the position of the design for locating snaps and borders.

Seems like a lot of work but the results are worth it. First few times are tough but it gets easier.
