Work Tables?

Recommended Posts

Would anyone happen to have any plans for making work tables like Tandy uses? Or something similar? I'm wanting

something that two people can sit at. Does anyone use the metal frame workbenches with the wooden tops? I'm just getting

started and need all the input I can get! Thanks!

You just entered a subject that is a BIG CAN OF WORMS! IT HAS NO.. ONE answer, OR A HUNDRED ANSWERS. Do you want to stand or sit? If you stand how tall are you? Two people?... how tall is the other person. Are you going to cut leather? ..Or tool? Or glue and shape? Belts?, saddles?, boots? bags maybe?

Do you want to build, or buy? That includes legs as well as tops. Do you want it permanent, or to move around the shop, maybe, or even relocate to somewhere else?

A picture of "What Tandy uses" that you refer to, might help.

Just some thoughts on your question.

Yep, you asked one of those almost religious questions. It depends on what you want to do on this bench. Cutting and dying could be done on a metal frame bench easy enough. The only part of leather work that is questionable on a metal bench is stamping and setting hardware. The cheaper thin metal legs tend to make the bench bounce. Anyone who has done woodwork on a cheap bench knows this. The problem with leather is that this can mess up stamp and hardware impressions. That's the main reason most people stick with pretty substantial wood work surfaces.

Youtube has a lot of videos on how to make a work bench. Metal legs would likely make your bench a bit more noisy, IMO.

I based mine on this design it's easy enough for most anyone to build and you can make the dimensions any size you want.

The plans for the "Cadillac" of leather workbenches (everything you think you might want) are posted by Ben in one of the replies to this thread.
