Making Your Own Gun Molds ? Anyone Do It?

Recommended Posts

I have some experience creating basic objects with polyester resin but not sure this is the way to go. I just bought an oddball gun and realized no one is making holsters for it. Now I can go ahead and just use mine but It has become my carry and I don't need it locked in to becoming a functional mold. ASP and Blue gun and the like don't yet make a mold for it. Has anyone here tried to create there own mold from a gun? If so .. what was your process and how successful was the outcome. I don't want to crud up my gun making the casting mold. Once I have the cast I am good to go. Any advice, thoughts or other are greatly appreciated.

Alex

Well, . . . you didn't say if it was a double stack 50 cal semi auto, . . . or a 17 double barrel derringer, . . . so it's hard to say for sure.

But, . . . I've made several in my wood shop, . . . make the general shape, . . . take it to the sander, . . . knock off the rough edges, . . . do a little judicious chisel and carving work, . . . it'll do for holsters.

Most challenging was a S&W model 29, . . .

And, . . . yes, . . . they're pretty much all out of southern yellow pine or white pine 1 by,..............

May God bless,

Dwight

There is a member of these forums goes by Jared has a company called Deffensive Carry Concepts he and his partner started makinbg some as they were able to get guns. I have bought a couple from him. Not sure what their process is but what I have gotten from them has been high quality. I know he said the material to make them is not cheap. You might try contacting him and see if he will share info. Like Dwight I have made several out of wood. What brand and model are you trying to do?

You can get the materials at http://www.smooth-on.com/

There is also a guy on another forum making mold guns using a vacuum former. Since I have a vacuum former I may try to do some. He has a couple of videos on youtube:

and
He sells kits which will mold around 4 guns at: http://redfeathergear.com/shop/

I am not affiliated with him but it looks relatively easy, providing you can vacuum form the shell.

Sorry about that guys .. its an SAR K2P. A little compact 9. Havent owned a 9 in forever and am having a ball with this one but its hard to find any parts for it. I have been asked to make a few holsters once people play with the gun and want one. They are fairly inexpensive guns and so far mine has performed wonderfully.

Videos are a huge help! Thanks Ken

Ken,

That looks like a copy of a CZ75 Compact/P01 to me. Rings makes one

http://www.blueguns.com/shopexd.asp?id=311

The picture shows a full size CZ75

I'd call and verify that they do indeed have the compact/P01 with light rail and then order that. Bet it's cheaper than making your own.

Yes, I have tried to do it. I'll risk the embarrassment to save you some. If you use a silicon that is thin to make the outside mold, it will (and I mean IT WILL) get into every crack, crevice, and hole in the gun. I tried it with a Walther P22 that I had JUST BOUGHT. I did not get to shoot the gun for over a year. I made a lot of holsters with it, but it was completely locked up from the inside where the silicon had penetrated the gun. I had considered laying thin plastic wrap over it but was worried about the extra width. And I assumed the liquid would be thicker. Nope. There's gotta be a way, but the kits they sell at Hobby Lobby is not it.

BTW, I got an OK mold out of the deal but not good enough to use. I should probably re cast it and try for a good one. The silicon outer mold came out fantastic.
